A tribute to the legendary rural, organic, meat-loving celebrity chef. This has been a live favourite for ages, but for some reason I never put it on This Is Not An Album. I probably thought it was too silly. What a ridiculous idea.
I played this song to Hugh at the River Cottage Autumn Festival in September 2009. He blushed like a schoolboy, and enjoyed every minute of it. Even when I was still playing it the next evening after a gallon of home-made cider.
lyrics
Chicken in a hutch
He don't do much
Just pecks and flaps and wanders about
His cousin chick
Was getting sick
But someone's let the chicken out
He raised alarms
About battery farms
The work of a hero never ends
He gave the birds
What they preferred
To stop them munching all their friends
I want to get out of town
I want to bring Tesco down
I want to make cabbage stew
I want to keep chickens too
I want to raise goats and lambs
I want to be a rural man
I want to be rock'n'roll
Like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
He grows PSB
In the shade of a tree
He's such a country stereotype
He overdosed
On a nine bird roast
He knows his woodcock from his snipe
I want to get out of town
I want to bring Tesco down
I want to make cabbage stew
I want to keep chickens too
I want to raise goats and lambs
I want to be a rural man
I want to be rock'n'roll
Like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
In welly boots
He hunts and shoots
He picks his herbs in the morning dew
He's got it right
He's living the life
That's why I want to be like Hugh
It's not just for his dashing silhouette against the sky
Hughie's got integrity and that's the reason why
I want to get out of town
I want to bring Tesco down
I want to make cabbage stew
I want to keep chickens too
I want to raise goats and lambs
I want to be a rural man
I want to be rock'n'roll
Like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
Ooh ooh ooh, I wanna be like Hugh ooh ooh
I wanna walk like Hugh, talk like Hugh too ooh ooh
You'll see it's true ooh ooh someone like me ee ee

This track was more of an experiment than anything. We don't have much gear in our garage and so trying to record a real pop song with one SM57, the arm of a deck chair and a box of nails can be quite challenging. Luckily though we picked up a harmonium from a car boot sale for 30quid. We also bought a wacky autotune pedal from the internet and deliberately manned up the autotune. Irony and sincerity. Our friends Dark Furs and BCATG have remixed the track. Buy their music too. :-) Juju Sophie

Just discovered this ancient gem among the treasures of Steve's collection. Beautiful melodies, intriguing harmonies and textures and fascinating bass sounds unheard elsewhere. chorna
An earthy yet somewhat chilly record about life, death, and reconnection, the latest from LOMA experiments with a turn towards the gloomy. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 16, 2024

"...an album that looks as much to this side of The Pond as the UK, She Makes War's debut album is a dark melange of 90s Riot Grrrl meets indie-pop meets disquieting ballads, all the time not missing a beat..."
